> WALDORF HONORS STUDENTS TO VISIT ITALY
Waldorf College
May 6, 2005

By Josh Damm, Senior Communications major from Forest City, Iowa

After completing the challenging classes of the Waldorf Honors College, eight students are about to receive their reward—13 days in Italy. From May 16-28, the Waldorf students and Director of the Honors College, Dr. Robert Alsop, will get a chance to see the sights that they have been studying about for the last 15 weeks as a part of an honors colloquium on the Italian Renaissance.

“We’re spending two nights in Rome, where we will tour the Vatican Museum, St. Peter’s Basilica, and Roman ruins,” Alsop said. “We will then take the train to Florence…where we will visit the Museum Accademia where Michelangelo’s ‘David’ is now kept and the Uffizi Galleries that hold a wealth of Renaissance Art.”

The group will travel from Florence to Milan to see Da Vinci’s “Last Supper.” From Milan they will travel to Menaggio to spend three nights on the shores of Lake Como and the foothills of the Alps. Their last two nights will be spent in Venice where they will tour the Doge’s Palace, float down the canals in gondolas and eat their last Italian gelato of the trip.

Brandi Murphy from Jefferson can’t decide what she wants to see the most. “I’m excited to see everything,” Murphy said. “I want to see as much as I possibly can and I’m really looking forward to being around another culture.”

“I am really looking forward to being in the city of Venice,” said student-body president and honors student, Andy Schryver from Farmington, New Mexico. “I am also interested in the art work and architecture which can be found all over the country.”

Honors students at Waldorf must complete one year of Honors English, Honors Philosophy, two Honors Colloquiums and present a paper as a part of Inquirere, Waldorf’s annual academic conference. They also must maintain a 3.5 GPA to be eligible for the trip.

Completing the Honors courses did not come easy for the students. “There were a few sleepless nights and a lot of work,” Tiffany Weir from Marshalltown said. “But it was a learning experience and it was totally worth it.”

In preparation for their trip, the students had to create a presentation that was between 30-40 minutes in length about a location of interest in Italy. When the students are in Italy, they will be responsible for teaching the rest of the group about the location they researched.

The Honors students were allowed to choose where they wanted to go with approval from the college. Alsop is glad the students chose to go to Italy. “The Italian Renaissance was a time of great intellectual energy,” Alsop said. “It seems an appropriate locations for honors students who seek to live the life of the mind.”

Students going on the trip are: Murphy; Schryver; Weir; Brenda Tlach from Britt; Kymberly Peterson from Boyden; Jessica Taylor from Waterloo; Ashley Young from Mason City; and Chase Chisholm from Forest City.
